Opportunities to study overseas

As an AUT student, you can take part in AUT Outbound - the AUT Student Exchange programme. You can study for one or two semesters on exchange with AUT’s many university partners around the globe and cross-credit your grades back to your AUT degree.

Learning overseas can change your life. Immerse yourself in another culture, make lifelong connections and get some international experience on your CV even before you graduate.

You remain enrolled at AUT and pay your normal tuition fees to AUT. In addition you also have to pay for all your own living expenses and travel to and from your host university. If you are willing to work hard and save the money (around NZ$8,000 - $12,000 per semester depending on where you go) it is definitely worth it.

Why go on exchange?

If you’ve ever talked to a returned exchange student you will know the answer. They burst with enthusiasm about all the experiences they’ve had. They will tell you they have learnt so much, both academically and personally. They return as self confident, mature citizens of the world who have an increased understanding of the culture they experienced, and also of who they are as New Zealanders.

Academically, exchange students have the opportunity to learn from different teaching and learning styles, and to take papers that may not be available at AUT - adding real value to their degrees.

Are you eligible?

We are looking for students who will be good ambassadors for AUT and New Zealand, with a strong commitment to making the most of the exchange opportunity. You must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelors degree and you should have completed your first year of study by the time of the exchange. You should also have achieved a B average grade in your tertiary studies.

Important information for those wishing to conduct research off-campus

Students wishing to conduct the research component of a degree off-campus for longer than three months will need to complete a mandatory supervision agreement detailing how the supervision will take place and, for periods of one year or greater, demonstrate that funding is available for face-to-face meetings at least twice per year.

Permanent residents and international students will need to be aware that depending on the length of time they intend to spend overseas, they may cease to be eligible for domestic tuition fees.

Doctoral candidates are required to be present in New Zealand for their D9 presentation and the oral examination.

International doctoral students must be resident in New Zealand for the duration of their research to be eligible for domestic fees. The residency provision equates with 75% of the academic years.  If you are intending to conduct your research from outside New Zealand then you will pay the full international fee. You will be permitted to reside overseas during the data collection phase if your research requires it.
