Student loans and allowances

Student loans

The student loan is quite easy to get, but you must pay the money back. It is important that you apply for a student loan as soon as possible - well before your programme commences. As soon as you are out in the workforce and earning over a certain threshold, you will be paying back your loan.To get a student loan you must be a NZ citizen, permanent resident (for 2 years or more) or have refugee status.

Just remember, whatever you borrow you will need to pay back.

Student allowances

You might be entitled to a student allowance while you are studying. The student allowance is designed to help with your living costs while you study. It is a weekly payment that you will not have to pay back.

There are specific conditions which apply to both student loans and allowances. You can find out more by visiting StudyLink
