H1N1 - Information for staff

posterUnwell at work
If you feel unwell while at work, and you are exhibiting flu-like symptoms, please contact Health Counselling & Wellbeing on 921 9992 (City Campus) or 921 9998 (North Shore Campus).  Advise the receptionist why you are calling and get instructions on what to do next.  Alternatively, phone your preferred medical professional and advise them.

Unwell at home
If you feel unwell at home, and you are exhibiting flu-like symptoms,  do not come to work. Inform your supervisor and contact your preferred medical professional (which may be AUT Health Counselling and Wellbeing) by phone or contact Healthline 0800 611 116 and follow their instructions.
Look after yourself as you usually would, stay warm and take plenty of fluids.

Manager instructions
If you have staff who report in sick with flu-like symptoms, please notify AUT HR Services (Glen McPhee) as soon as possible. If the individual’s situation changes, you should also notify HR.

Cleaning supplies (contact John Birkin Ext 8651)

Ensuring you keep your hands thoroughly clean is the most effective measure to protect against the spread of H1N1 and seasonal influenza.

To support this AUT is distributing bottles of personal hand sanitiser to staff.  Used in conjunction with normal hygiene precautions (see information on the AUT and MOH websites for more detail), hand sanitisers are a good way of protecting yourself against influenza.  There is one bottle for each staff member and these will be delivered to each mail drop-off area.

Alternatively please contact John Birkin (Cleaning) or your Health and Safety Advisor.

Travel guidelines
AUT will issue updated travel guidelines for staff and managers as the H1N1 pandemic situation changes.  The last guidelines were issued on 17th June.  Contact your manager or AUT staff member who is responsible for organising your travel for this information.

There are a number of important issues when making decisions regarding international travel.  This is especially relevant when increasing numbers of University members are intending to travel especially overseas (study and semester breaks).  You are urged to take extra care and to check travel destinations and advisories.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MAFT) issues advice and restriction on overseas travel.

The AUT Travel Agent, Orbit Corporate Travel monitors the status of overseas countries and advises clients on any restrictions accordingly.

Our provider of Travel Insurance (ACE) should be consulted for their latest positions on travel insurance.

It is recommended that travellers follow the same precautionary measures as with seasonal influenza including receiving a seasonal flu vaccine, washing your hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when ill.

New Zealanders who have recently travelled to areas which have confirmed cases of Swine flu and who develop flu-like symptoms are advised to seek medical attention immediately.

University closure
The university remains open for “business as usual”, and our planning has been undertaken with the objective of continuing to provide the fullest possible service delivery throughout the disruptions of a pandemic.
The Ministry of Health  will advise the Vice Chancellor on the need to close the university.  This may involve a range of possible scenarios, including limited public access to the university, closing the university to students but open to staff, or the university open only to core staff to support essential operations. You will be advised if the pandemic progresses to this stage

Attendance at work
Staff are required to continue to work during a pandemic unless they are on some form of leave, or other directions are issued.  AUT is responsible for maintaining a safe place at work in accordance with the Health & Safety in Employment Act, and our planning has been undertaken in full awareness of this.

Leave
The normal and established provisions for the taking of sick and annual leave in the respective employment agreements, and consistent with AUT past practice, continue to be relevant.  See the various provisions in the employment agreements for more information.

Working from home guidelines
There is an existing AUT guideline for working from homeand the principles in this guideline remain important considerations.  Most importantly, any such arrangements must be discussed in advance with your manager, and approved by them.  Staff working from home should follow the normal health and safety procedures and not increase the risks of injury to themselves.
