Getting to AUT by Bike

Biking to AUT cheap, eco-friendly, and a great way to get some exercise into your day. It's great if you live from 1 to 10km away from the university – or further if you want to get really fit! (Riding 10km takes about 30 minutes)

New cycling lanes are being introduced around the city. Cycle maps are available from MAXX.

Bicycles can be taken on ferries (free) and trains ($1).

'Bike and ride' lockers are available at Akoranga, Constellation and Albany (for the Northern Express Bus Service), the New Lynn bus interchange, and the Glen Innes, Manurewa and Papatoetoe train stations.

Cycle Safety

The MAXX website has safety tips for Auckland cyclists.

If you come across a hazard on the road or have suggestions to make cycling in Auckland easier, contact the Auckland City Council.

Cycle Racks

Campus Services is planning to introduce more bike racks for students to park and chain bicycles.

If you would like to tell us where you would like these bike racks to be put, please email transport@aut.ac.nz and we will be happy to look into your suggestion.

Wherever you park, make sure you lock your bike securely – a D-lock (aka U-lock) is best, and only costs approx $35. Also secure your cycling accessories (helmet, lights etc) or take them with you.

It is a good idea to keep a record of your bike's make and model, frame serial number, and distinguishing features. You can register your bike at the New Zealand Bicycle Registry, which will help Police return your bike in case of theft.

Showers And Lockers

Showers and lockers are available on both campuses.

Parts And Repairs

The law requires wearing a bicycle helmet; a white front light and flashing red rear light are also required for night riding. Reflective sashes are recommended to improve visibility.

The closest bike shop to AUT is the Penny Farthing Cycle Shop, on the corner of Symonds St and Khyber Pass Rd, phone 09 379 2524. They give a 10% student discount on parts and repairs.
